2010 Recipient Family

Schepker FamilyDoug and Jennifer Schepker and their three little boys, Trey, 8, Tyler, 5 and Sam, 2 ½ , lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Doug was employed by the Gulf Shores Golf Association and Jennifer is a teacher at Magnolia Springs School. Together, they seemed to effortlessly manage the schedules and energy of their three sons.  Doug, was known for his easy going nature, friendly and always ready smile.  He usually had one boy on his shoulders, one under his arm and the other one by the hand.  Everyone said he was like their big brother because he loved to play with them more than anything else.

On February 13th, 2009, Doug died suddenly from an infection that began in a scrape on his knee and rapidly shut down his body.  By the time doctors had diagnosed the infection and tried to stop its progression surgically, he died of cardiac arrest.  This all took place within a few days, leaving family and friends in a state of disbelief and overwhelming grief.  Doug was 38 years old.

This tragedy had left Jennifer a widow and single mother, and three little boys without a father and their best buddy.  Doug’s parents lost their only other son less than one year ago.  Family and friends are stepping in to help as much as possible. Even though Doug and Jennifer had their own plates full with the challenges of raising their children and daily family life, they were always ready to help someone else. Now, this family needs the help and care of others.
